Worth knowing first

“Used” and “reconditioned” are not the same word

The difference between them is most of what you are paying for, and it is the thing to get straight before you ring anybody at all.

Used

A lift that has been in someone else’s house. On its own the word tells you nothing about condition, what was checked, or what was replaced.

Reconditioned

Stripped, worn parts replaced, rebuilt and tested before resale. Batteries, charging contacts, safety edges and upholstery as a minimum.

The three questions

What exactly was replaced? Who did the work? What cover comes with it? A straight answer to those three tells you who you are dealing with.

Fitted, not just sold

A lift delivered on a pallet is not a bargain. Ours are surveyed, fitted to your staircase, tested, handed over, with the old one taken away.

Why local matters here

We are in N21, not a call centre

Zengo is based at 4 Hoodcote Gardens, Winchmore Hill. For most of North London that means a survey booked quickly rather than whenever a van is next coming your way, and it means the people who fit the lift are the people who come back if it stops.

That matters more with used stairlifts than with new ones. A reconditioned lift is a good buy when whoever refurbished it is local, accountable and still answering the phone in three years.

  • Enfield, Barnet and Haringey — effectively on the doorstep from N21.
  • Islington, Camden and Waltham Forest — a short run down the A10 or A1.
  • N and EN postcodes — the area we are in and know best.
  • The rest of London too — we cover all throughout, but North London is home.

What reconditioning involves

Wear parts out, long-life parts checked

A stairlift is a simple machine and the things that fail on one are well known. Refurbishment is not a clean and a polish — it is replacing the short-life components and verifying everything else.

  • Batteries — the single most common failure, and the first thing replaced.
  • Charging contacts — where the lift takes power when parked; they pit and corrode.
  • Safety edges — the sensors that stop the lift against an obstruction.
  • Upholstery and trim — so it does not look like it came out of another house.
  • Drive train — inspected, and replaced wherever there is wear.

The chassis, motor housing and rail are cleaned, inspected and tested rather than swapped. On a decent lift those outlast everything on the list above by years.

Who it suits

When a used stairlift is the right call

Reconditioned is not a compromise for everybody, and it is not right for everybody either. Being independent is what lets us tell you which one you are.

Straight staircases

Where nearly all reconditioned stock sits, because a straight rail cuts down to fit the next house. A curved rail cannot.

When budget decides it

If the real choice is a used lift now or no lift at all, reconditioned is the answer that gets somebody back upstairs.

A shorter-term need

After an operation, or while a downstairs room is being converted. Paying new prices for eighteen months of use rarely makes sense.

When new is the honest answer

If the stairs curve, or the weight is near the limit, or it needs to last twenty years, we will say so — even though new is worth more to us.

Questions

Used stairlifts in North London: your questions answered

What is the difference between used and reconditioned?
They get used as the same word and they are not. A used stairlift has simply been in somebody else’s house. A reconditioned one has been stripped, had its worn parts replaced, been rebuilt and tested before resale. What we supply is reconditioned. If a lift is described only as “used”, ask exactly what was done to it and who did the work.
How much cheaper is a used stairlift?
It turns on the model, its age and how long a rail your staircase needs, so a price quoted before anyone has seen your stairs is guesswork. What is consistently true is that reconditioned is the cheapest honest route to a quality lift, and on a straight staircase it is often the difference between getting one this month and not getting one. Ring 0800 4647401 and we will tell you what we have in.
Can I get a used curved stairlift?
Rarely. A curved rail is bent to the rise, going and radius of one particular staircase and will not fit another, so there is almost no reconditioned curved stock anywhere. Nearly all used stairlifts are straight. If someone offers you a cheap second-hand curved rail, ask very carefully which staircase it was built for.
Which parts of North London do you cover?
All of it, and we are in it. We are at 4 Hoodcote Gardens in Winchmore Hill, N21 — so Enfield, Barnet, Haringey, Islington, Camden, Waltham Forest and the N and EN postcodes either side of us are genuinely local rather than a drive across the city.
Is a reconditioned stairlift reliable?
A properly refurbished lift from a decent maker is a sound buy. These are simple, robust machines, and the components that wear are well known and replaceable. The reliability comes from the quality of the refurbishment rather than the age of the unit, which is why what was replaced matters far more than the year it was built.
What cover comes with a used stairlift?
Ask every supplier, and get the answer in writing. New Acorn lifts carry a 12-month manufacturer guarantee. Cover on a reconditioned unit is a separate question with a different answer, and it varies by model and supplier. We will tell you plainly what applies to the specific lift we are quoting you.
Do you take the old stairlift away?
Yes, and removal is inside the quoted price rather than added at the end. If the old lift is worth refurbishing it goes on to be reconditioned itself, which is where a good deal of second-hand stock comes from in the first place.
